Aussies also have lots of favoritism in selection. The way the most over rated player/captain - Michael Clarke is pushed up over Hussey & others, is evident. They have many 'in-fighting' too (Dean Jones Vs Steve Waugh; Damien Martin Vs Ponting; Warne Vs McGuill etc etc) Plus the omission of some great cricketers (Langer, Slater, Boon, Stuart Clark, Andy Bichel + + +) for no reason suggests that all is not well in Oz selection process.
Only difference is, ACB cover up things very well, like the way they did in match fixing cases of Warne & Mark Waugh. Both fixed the match against Pak along with Salim Malik, lost the match, but managed to come out clear betraying Malik (Courtsy-then ICC chief Malcolm Speed).
Ponting is not a great captain. Ponting was living in the glory of Warne & McGrath. His down fall started ever since they retired. His batting technique is also not fool proof (Freddie exposed him many times). The initial front foot forward and across has always worked against him. When you have flaws in technique, they work against you during the bad form. So this was expected. Also, his street fighter / non walking / ungentlemanly attitude branded him as a villian. More over, two former cricketers worked against him non stop (Ian Chappell & Warne).
Now watch - Shane Watson is brought in against Michael Clarke.
