YET ANOTHER FEATHER IN THE CAP OF CHANDRA ROY!

By Staff Reporter

Yes, yet another successful year for Southern California Winter Cricket League of 2010-11.  The finals of Divisions I and II were held at Long Beach ground on Saturday, March 26, 2011.  Transformers played against Torrance and Hollywood AS played against Culver City.

Transformers and Hollywood A’s won the championship in their respective divisions.  Colin Cox won the Man of the Match award for Division I while Satish Balu won the Man of the Match award for Division II.

Winter League which was started by Chandra Roy about nine years ago is growing in strength year by year.  In the recently concluded season, there were two divisions consisting of 14 teams.   Even though there was competition between teams, the matches were played in a friendly atmosphere.    This league which occurs at the conclusion of the SCCA league provides an opportunity for the players to keep in touch with the game and play cricket throughout the year.

Winter League is a one man show and is run professionally.  This tournament attracts more teams each year and is run solely on sponsorships and private donations.  This year, amongst others, the league had Vasutex, Rodeo Realty, Jayabharat Restaurant, State Bank of India, as sponsors.

Paucity of grounds deprives the cricketers from playing more such tournaments.  There are a number of cricketers who do not play regular league because of work/family commitments.  If more such 20-over tournaments were held for a shorter duration, these cricketers would be playing again.

In Division I final, Transformers beat Torrance by 7 wickets.  Torrance batted first and scored 65 runs in 17.4 overs.  In reply, Transformers scored the required runs in 15 overs for the loss of three wickets.

Scores:  Torrance 65 all out (Hari Srinivas 11, Colin Cox 3 for 7, Abhimanyu Rajp  2 for 12 and Hardeep Singh 2 for 15, Ashish Lone 2 for 6) lost to Transformers  66 for 3 (Abhisek  Powar 22 not out,   Manjeet Jaichand 22, Hari Srinivas 2 for 11).

In Division II final, Hollywood A’s beat Culver City and became the Champions for 2010-11 season.

At the conclusion of the finals, a presentation ceremony was held to distribute trophies to the winners, runners-up of the respective divisions and other outstanding achievers.   K.C.S. Rao, Editor and Publisher of Weekend Cricket magazine, Pramod Nirmal, a sponsor, Mrs. Chandra Roy and SCCA officials present, (Ravi Kandan, Vice President, SCCA), Sunil Ramineni, Secretary, SCCA) distributed the prizes.  Mark Rowen of Pro Sport Pics was the official photographer.  All the pictures of the tournament, including the presentation ceremony pictures are on his web page at www.mrprosportpics.com.  You can select the picture you want and order the same directly from him

Pictures of the teams and picture of presentation ceremony are attached.   Chandra Roy, good work and keep it up.  Weekend cricket magazine administration and its readers wish you success in your future endeavors.

‘Global Warming’ has not spared Southern California region and its cricket.  It has not only been raining for a longer duration this year but has snowed in Southern California – a rare event.  Southern California Winter League was badly affected by these rains and a few games have to be postponed.  This league has now reached the play-off stages and should be completed within the next few weeks provided the rains show mercy!
